I. Awareness Month: The Task Force looked at a series of awareness months, including Juneteenth and Pride Month. Because we had already sent an acknowledgment to the Commission for Black History Month, it was decided by consensus that I would prepare a statement about Pride Month.
II. The Showing of Dawnland: We discussed the development that the Executive Committee has circled back to September at the retreat to try to schedule the viewing and panel discussion on the second day. This has to be coordinated with Ariel Ricci, the Executive Director of the Permanent Commission on Racial, Indigenous, and Tribal Populations, with whom I spoke at length and who heads the organization that is covering the cost for our showing in conjunction with them and potentially The Permanent Commission on the Status of Women. The dates of the retreat are tentatively scheduled for September 17 and 18. Once that is confirmed, I will move ahead to touch all the bases necessary to pull this together with others.
III. The Demographic Survey: The Task Force had an extended conversation about the language in the Preamble of the survey that allowed people to forgo certain questions, if they so choose. We agreed that the language would change to something approximating "Feel free to skip any question that might make you uncomfortable." We were particularly concerned about the effect for some Commissioners relative to questions pertaining to gender and citizenship. The Chair edited the language for the final version.
There was an important question asked regarding whether the results would be subject to FOIA requests. My belief was that as long as the data was aggregated, we need not be concerned, but I agreed to ask Britt if I could consult our liaison in the Attorney General's Office.
Addendum: Upon conclusion of the meeting, I contacted Britt who confirmed that as a public entity anything we do is subject to FOIA inquiries; however, she similarly has gathered information about Commissioners and was not concerned, especially if the data is aggregated. This information was transmitted to the Committee the same day.
