AUGUSTA, Maine – As part of a nationwide effort to celebrate 30 years of contributions made by the millions of AmeriCorps members, volunteers and alumni who serve their country domestically, Volunteer Maine will host an anniversary celebration at the Blaine House on September 27th. The event will also gather most recent AmeriCorps members in Maine for a commitment to service and pledge ceremony.
To spotlight the valuable contributions of AmeriCorps members and volunteers who pledged to “get things done” for our state and nation these past 30 years, the event will feature various speakers who began their careers as members, including Sec. Bellows and guest speaker Heather Chandler. Current serving members will participate in a trail building project at Bond Brook in the afternoon.
Americans from all walks of life have come together in service to others, to tackle the state's most pressing challenges. These volunteers are essential to our economic and social well-being. They are the lifeblood of our schools and shelters, hospitals and hotlines, and civic, nonprofit and faith-based organizations across the state.
Currently, more than 1.25 million AmeriCorps members and hundreds of thousands of AmeriCorps Seniors volunteers have taken the pledge and served in communities large and small to help others live healthier, safer, smarter and more resilient lives, while enhancing their own skills and earning money for their education.
Volunteer Maine awards grants to operate AmeriCorps programs to public and nonprofit organizations using funds allocated to Maine by the AmeriCorps federal agency. In 2023, Maine AmeriCorps members completed over 106,000 hours of service across 81 community locations.
