In September 1993, President Bill Clinton signed the National and Community Trust Act establishing AmeriCorps. Just one year later, more than 20,000 Americans took the first AmeriCorps pledge and were sworn in at the White House and in states across the country.
Thirty years later, more than 7,600 Maine residents joined 1.25 million AmeriCorps members and pledged to serve communities large and small, to help others live healthier, safer, smarter, and more resilient lives, and to carry the commit into their post-AmeriCorps lives. Those 7,600 people devoted nearly 11 million hours during their AmeriCorps terms and, while enhancing their own skills, earned a combined $26.8 million in education awards to use post-service.
This year marks the 30th anniversary of AmeriCorps.
As part of its 30th anniversary activities, we welcome back AmeriCorps Alums and host a swearing-in commitment to service ceremony for the most recent members, to be held at the Blaine House, on Friday, September 27th from 9:30 am to 11:30am. Lunch will be provided at Bond Brook followed by a service project of seasonal trail preparations from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.
The event is open to all AmeriCorps Alums and through special invitation. If you would like more information, or have any questions, please contact us at (207) 624-7790 or send an email to Jamie.McFaul@maine.gov.
