Service-learning is a pedagogy that integrates curriculum with service by focusing on community needs that are targeted by students for action. Numerous studies conducted over the past two decades overwhelmingly conclude high quality service-learning is directly linked to improved academic achievement and engagement, positive civic attitudes and behaviors, and enhanced social and personal skills.
The quality of service-learning is an important predictor of its impact on academic outcomes, including students’ school engagement and motivation to learn.
This publication focuses on institutionalizing service-learning in a district so students' experiences are not confined to a single classroom or grade level or building.
