Climate Corps members will conduct energy audits of Weatherization Assistance Program clients’ homes, provide energy efficiency education to community residents, and analyze data from homes audited and weatherized. Members will also receive extensive training in weatherization and they have the opportunity to earn Building Performance Institute credentials that can lead to careers in the growing green buildings sector. Members will earn a living allowance equivalent to $18 an hour and will be eligible for a $1,000 end of term award upon successful completion of the program.

DCP was formed in 2017 with the merging of two organizations in the region, Child and Family Opportunities and the Washington Hancock Community Agency. With a mission to improve the quality of life and reduce the impact of poverty in Downeast communities, DCP is committed to creating and delivering services and programs that treat community members with dignity and compassion and that offer them the possibility of achieving their goals and dreams.

DCP was awarded the pilot Climate Corps grant in 2022. “DCP is committed to partnerships that address historical environmental inequities that result in disproportionate economic and health threats for rural Downeast community members who are living in poverty. This exciting opportunity with Maine Climate Corps is a pivotal step towards focusing on this environmental injustice to make a positive difference in the lives of those we serve,” says Executive Director, Rebecca Palmer.

The Maine Climate Corps is a recommended strategy in Maine Won’t Wait, the State’s Climate Action Plan. Climate Corps was created in Maine statute and a small amount of funding was authorized by the 130th Legislature. Priorities of the Maine Climate Corps include Energy Education and Outreach, Community Resilience Planning, and Green Schools. According to Maryalice Crofton, Volunteer Maine Executive Director, “this pilot program is significant because it is completely Maine-based and lets us connect the power of service to economic impacts on families and economic opportunities for people entering the workforce or changing careers.”

To apply to serve in DCP’s Climate Corps, visit their website -- access here.

To learn more about sponsoring a Climate Corps program, contact Kirsten Brewer (kirsten.brewer@maine.gov, 207.624.7792) at Volunteer Maine.
###

About Volunteer Maine
Volunteer Maine, the state service commission, builds capacity and sustainability in Maine's volunteer sector by funding service programs, developing volunteer managers and service-learning practitioners, raising awareness of the scope and the impact of the volunteer sector, and encouraging an ethic of service. The research also estimates that volunteers generated nearly $873.7 million in economic value in the state.

The community contributions by Maine volunteers earned a ranking of fourth for formal volunteering with a formal volunteer rate of 34.9% and third for informal volunteering with a rate of 65%. This is the first Volunteering and Civic Life in America report since 2015 that included state-specific data. In 2015, Maine earned an 11th place ranking with a formal volunteer rate of 31.6%.

Formal volunteering involves helping others through an organization. Informal volunteering involves helping others outside of an organizational context, including doing taking meals to neighbors, watching each other's children, stacking wood, plowing a driveway, running errands, and other things to lend a hand.

"We have all wondered how volunteering changed through the pandemic," said Maryalice Crofton, Executive Director of Volunteer Maine. "This data -- the first state level since 2015 -- shows us that there was a shift in volunteering but very little shrinkage. The challenge now is to understand the shift and help community programs adjust so they can add new volunteers."

The Volunteering and Civic Life in America research is the most comprehensive data on American volunteering and civic engagement assembled. Based on a survey conducted by AmeriCorps and the US Census every other year, the research includes data on volunteering through organizations, informal helping and other civic behaviors. Use the link below to view the research in its entirety.

Volunteering and Civic Life in America webpage

The most recent results find that over half of Americans, or 124.7 million people, informally helped their neighbors at least once in the past year. Additionally, more than 23 percent of Americans, or 60.7 million people, formally volunteered with an organization, giving more than 4.1 billion hours of service with an estimated economic value of $122.9 billion.

Volunteer Maine is currently accepting nominations for its in-state volunteer recognition program, the annual Governor's Awards for Service and Volunteerism. Since 1987, the Governor's Awards for Service and Volunteerism have celebrated and recognized the role of citizen volunteers in the success and vitality of Maine communities. Nominations are due by February 28 at 11:59 p.m. Use the link below to access more information.

Governor's Awards for Service and Volunteerism webpage

AmeriCorps brings people together across divides and bring communities back stronger for a more united America. The increase received unanimous support during the board's February business meeting.

The vote builds off of and strengthens the work of the AmeriCorps federal agency to increase to $16,502 the nationwide minimum stipend for any person serving 1,700 hours. The stipend, also called a living allowance, permits individuals to devote all their time to serving in programs that address response to COVID-19, energy conservation, climate impacts, education, youth development, and economic development. The added increase in Maine is made possible by American Rescue Plan Act funds awarded to the Commission. The new minimum living allowance will take effect July 1, the beginning of the 2022-23 AmeriCorps program year.

The increase of the living allowance in Maine is part of a larger, ongoing effort to reduce barriers to service. Commissioners also increased the funds per full-time member provided to grantee organizations to $26,000 per 1700 hours of service to support the new minimum living allowance and related member insurances. AmeriCorps is a cost-share program that provides federal funds for the added human resources (AmeriCorps members) while community agencies provide the staff and other elements needed to carry out service activities.

"The aim of the changes is to return AmeriCorps to its original goal of making service an option for any eligible person, regardless of economic means," stated Volunteer Maine Executive Director Maryalice Crofton. "Maine communities need the time, talent, and passion of residents from all walks of life as they tackle local needs through AmeriCorps service programs. And the AmeriCorps opportunities for skill development, career exploration and post-secondary education funds need to be available to anyone who is willing to devote a year to the efforts."

"The Commissioners' decision to increase AmeriCorps member stipends is a most welcome one," shared David Cote, Director of the Van Buren Resiliency Project, which sponsors the AmeriCorps Five to Ninety-Five program. "I have always found AmeriCorps members to be deeply committed to sharing their considerable talents by dedicating themselves to eradicating poverty and improving the lives of seniors, children, and families. Now, with this moderate boost, the opportunity to become involved in making a solid, positive difference in a community's quality of life will be open to a greater number of gifted people."

In addition to the increased living allowance, AmeriCorps members are also eligible to earn additional benefits while serving. They include student-loan forbearance, health coverage, and childcare (if needed). After successfully completing their term of service, members receive an AmeriCorps Education Award. This award can be used to pay off qualified student loans or to finance college, graduate school, or vocational training at eligible institutions.

Photo of Amanda, an AmeriCorps member serving the First4 AmeriCorps program. They also assist in organizing a self governing elder program that easily connects participants to much needed resources.

Additional media coverage

"Volunteer Maine Commissioners vote unanimously to increase AmeriCorps service stipend" -- Bangor Daily News -- access story on Bangor Daily News website

Categories

AmeriCorps

The Commission

  Fri, 25 Mar 2022 14:11:48 +0000 Bryan.Roche@maine.gov 1311 at http://volunteermaine.gov Media Advisory: 2022 AmeriCorps Member Conference 3/30 http://volunteermaine.gov/index.php/media/news/media-advisory-2022-americorps-member-conference-330 Media Advisory: 2022 AmeriCorps Member Conference 3/30
    March 22, 2022
Bryan.Roche@ma… <time datetime="2022-03-22T16:02:22-04:00" title="Tuesday, March 22, 2022 - The conference is by AmeriCorps members, for AmeriCorps members; and seeks to provide important professional development opportunities and skill-building workshops.

WHEN: Wednesday, March 30 8:45 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. The keynote will take place at 10:00 a.m. The keynote speakers come from Mano en Mano (Hand to Hand), a nonprofit organization offering education and advocacy: Juana Rodriguez Vazquez, Executive Director & Migrant Education and Rayitos de Sol Childcare Director, and Leslie Monroy, Migrant Education Services Coordinator.

WHERE: Virtual Event, Zoom (any interested media members can email Bryan Roche, communications officer, at bryan.roche@maine.gov for access)

Hundreds of AmeriCorps members in Maine are dedicating their time and talents to address critical needs in Maine, such as education, conservation, public health, community resilience, and public safety. This year's conference is virtual again and will build on last year's engaging and inspiring virtual conference.

This year's theme, "Celebrating Community Voices," seeks to highlight and celebrate the communities AmeriCorps members serve across the state. There can often be a disconnect between members and their community due to relocation, so members may not be familiar with the community. The focus on community is to ensure that the conference is not isolated from the communities' members serve in.

Congressman Jared Golden (ME-02) and Shenna Bellows, Maine Secretary of State and former AmeriCorps member, will be joining the conference to deliver special remarks to AmeriCorps members.

"Celebrating Community Voices" is sponsored by Bangor Savings Bank. Logistical support is provided to AmeriCorps members by Volunteer Maine, the Maine Commission for Community Service.

###

About AmeriCorps

AmeriCorps, a federal agency, brings people together to tackle the country's most pressing challenges, through national service and volunteering.
